On June 24th, 2014, Los Angelitos Board members: Bill Sparks, Janisse Martinez, Josh Devall and Sarah Garfield presented Encinitas Unified School District (EUSD) with a check for the amount of $17,524 to help fund 40 children into the after-school program at Paul Ecke Central (PEC) School in Encinitas for the current school year.

What started in 2009 as a small after school sports and arts program for low-income children has grown to a full partnership between EUSD, PEC school, the PEC PTA and Los Angelitos.  For the entire school year, 40 low-income children benefit from 5-day a week after-school care at a greatly reduced cost.

For the last several years, supplementing this after school program and in partnership with high school students from San Dieguito Academy (SDA), Los Angelitos has brought in 12 volunteers (called "Trailblazers") to tutor, mentor and provide homework help to the after-school participants.  Currently, the Trailblazers are working with the after school children twice a week for an hour on reading activities, which is this school year’s academic focus for Los Angelitos"

Gaby Beas-Peacemaker

Gaby is an Aide for San Diego County's Region IX Migrant Education program where her area of responsibility includes Encinitas and San Marcos.        Migrant Education is a federally funded program authorized through the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 designed to provide supplementary educational and support services to identified migrant students.

Having grown up with her grandparents who themselves spent years working in the Ecke Nurseries of Encinitas, Gaby has experienced the challenges facing the low income migrant families that live and work in our predominantly affluent community.  With this personal connection Gaby not only understands their needs and hardships but at the same time has earned the respect, trust and confidence of those she strives to help.

Through her advocacy and tireless 24/7 approach, Gaby is literally helping several hundred of Encinitas's most in need children to further their academic studies and close the "achievement gap" that risks placing us at a distinct disadvantage in the global economy of the 21st century and if unattended plants the seeds of social inequity and conflict in our community.

It’s that time of the year again! The second group of teens (Shown above) were great.  We did a lot of interesting things over the summer. They have completed almost all of their hours by committing double time to the program.  The Graduation was held on Friday, October 11th.
